Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga has appealed to President William Ruto to consider promoting security personnel who served the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, citing their unwavering loyalty and exceptional service.
Speaking on Sunday during a funeral service, Oburu commended the officers for their dedication, saying they remained by Raila's side through his political struggles and health challenges.
“Your Excellency, the security personnel who have been taking care of Raila have done an outstanding job. They kept vigil and stood by him throughout. I would like to plead with you to grant them a promotion, even if just one grade,” said Oburu.
He also extended heartfelt gratitude to Dr. David Oluya, Raila Odinga’s long-time personal doctor, acknowledging his dedication over the years. According to Oburu, Dr. Oluya accompanied Raila during treatment in India, Dubai, and Nairobi, and remained a constant source of support.
“I want to give thanks to Doctor David Oluya, who has been my brother's personal doctor and supported him all throughout. I also want to thank Ogeta, who cared for Jakom up to his last breath,” he added.
Oburu further commended the team that repatriated Raila’s body from India, saying their swift and compassionate efforts had significantly eased the family’s burden during an immensely difficult period.
He also expressed appreciation to the broader security apparatus and government officials for facilitating Raila’s care in his final days.
“I want to thank the security, the army, and the armed forces, all of whom are under the instructions of the president. Thank you again for what you did for us,” he said.
Raila’s personal bodyguard, Maurice Ogee, also paid tribute to the former premier, describing their bond as one that went beyond professional duty. He likened their relationship to that of a father and son, forged over many years of trust, service, and shared political trials.
Ogee’s emotion was palpable during the public viewing of Raila’s body in Parliament, reflecting the deep personal loss felt by those closest to the ODM leader.
Raila Odinga passed away recently after a period of illness, triggering a national outpouring of grief for the iconic political figure who played a central role in Kenya’s democratic evolution.
