MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich Champions STEM Education with Ongoing Construction of Modern Science Laboratory at St. John Bosco Cheptongei Day Secondary School

A major education milestone is unfolding in Moiben/Kuserwo Ward as the construction of a state-of-the-art science laboratory at St. John Bosco Cheptongei Day Secondary School continues under the leadership of Marakwet West Member of Parliament, Hon. Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich. The project, funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), reflects the MP’s steadfast commitment to improving education infrastructure and advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in the constituency.

Hon. Toroitich emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategic effort to equip all schools in Marakwet West with modern, practical learning facilities that will help learners compete favorably in science and technology-driven careers.

“Through NG-CDF, we are doing everything possible to ensure that all our institutions are STEM compliant,” said Hon. Toroitich. “Our goal is to provide well-equipped science laboratories that will enhance practical learning, foster innovation, and prepare our students for the competitive global economy.”

The new laboratory at St. John Bosco Cheptongei Day Secondary School is expected to revolutionize science teaching in the area by providing a conducive space for hands-on experiments and research. Previously, students had to rely on theoretical lessons due to inadequate laboratory facilities — a challenge that has long hindered effective science education in rural schools.

“Once completed and fully equipped, this laboratory will bridge the gap between theory and practice,” the MP added. “It will inspire more students to pursue science-related subjects and careers, ultimately contributing to national development.”

According to the project engineers, the facility will include modern workstations, chemical storage areas, water and gas systems, safety equipment, and digital learning tools designed to support both Chemistry and Biology practicals. Construction work is progressing steadily, with the building already taking shape and expected to be completed in the coming months.

Hon. Toroitich noted that the Cheptongei project is just one among several ongoing education projects across the constituency. Similar science laboratories and classrooms are being built in other wards to ensure equitable access to quality learning environments.

“We are not just constructing buildings — we are building the future of our children,” he said. “Education is the most powerful tool for transforming our communities, and every investment we make today will yield lasting results for generations to come.”

Community members, teachers, and students have expressed their appreciation for the development, describing it as a long-awaited dream come true.
Mrs. Janet Kiplagat, a science teacher at the school, noted that the facility will greatly improve the quality of education offered.

“For years, our learners could not conduct experiments due to lack of proper facilities. With this new laboratory, we will finally be able to teach science the way it should be taught — practically and effectively,” she said.

Parents also applauded Hon. Toroitich and the NG-CDF committee for their dedication to uplifting education standards.

“This project shows true leadership and concern for our children’s future,” said local parent representative Mr. Kiprono. “We can already see the difference CDF projects are making in our schools.”

Hon. Toroitich reaffirmed his commitment to transforming learning institutions in Marakwet West, adding that similar infrastructure projects will continue to be rolled out to support education, health, and youth empowerment.

“We are transforming learning institutions in Marakwet West — one project at a time,” he said. “This is part of our long-term vision to ensure every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education and modern facilities. To God be the glory.”
