In a bold and heartfelt appeal, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has called on President William Ruto to rename the Talanta Hela Stadium in honor of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Speaking during a public event in Bondo, Wanga emphasized that Odinga’s immense contribution to the Nyanza region and Kenya at large deserves lasting recognition.
“Raila Odinga is not just a political icon—he is a symbol of resilience, democracy, and development in our region,” Wanga said. “Naming the stadium after him would be a fitting tribute to his legacy and love for sports.”
The Talanta Hela Stadium, currently under construction, is part of the government’s initiative to promote youth talent and sports development. Wanga proposed that the facility be renamed Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium, blending the national vision with regional pride.
She also floated the idea of hosting a high-profile friendly match between English Premier League giants Arsenal and Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars, once the stadium is completed. Noting that both Ruto and Odinga are Arsenal fans, she said the match would symbolize unity and celebrate Odinga’s enduring influence.
The proposal has sparked conversations across the country, with supporters praising the gesture as timely and respectful, while critics question the politicization of public infrastructure.
Still, Wanga remains firm in her stance. “This is not about politics—it’s about honoring a man who has given his all for Kenya,” she concluded.
As the stadium nears completion, all eyes are on President Ruto’s response. Will the Talanta Hela Stadium become a monument to Raila Odinga’s legacy? The nation waits.
