Kalonzo Musyoka Pays Last Respects to Raila Odinga
By Brad Mukopi
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Friday paid his final respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “brother, patriot, and tireless champion of democracy.”
Speaking during the State Funeral Service held at Nyayo National Stadium, Kalonzo delivered an emotional tribute to his longtime political ally and friend, recalling decades of shared struggle, sacrifice, and service to the nation.
> “Today, Kenya mourns not just a leader, but a father of our democracy,” Kalonzo said. “Raila Odinga was a man who gave his all to this country — a fearless fighter for justice, equity, and the rights of the downtrodden. I have lost a comrade, a confidant, and a brother.”
Kalonzo, who had cut short an official visit to the United Kingdom to attend the service, stood alongside fellow opposition leaders, government officials, and international dignitaries in honoring Raila’s towering legacy.
The two leaders, often referred to as the pillars of Kenya’s opposition politics, formed a formidable alliance during key political moments — most notably in the 2013 and 2017 general elections under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) and the National Super Alliance (NASA).
In his tribute, Kalonzo emphasized Raila’s commitment to unity and reconciliation, referencing the historic 2018 “Handshake” between Raila and then-President Uhuru Kenyatta as a defining moment in Kenya’s democratic journey.
> “He chose peace when he could have chosen protest. He chose dialogue over division. His love for Kenya was greater than personal ambition,” Kalonzo said.
The State Funeral at Nyayo Stadium drew thousands of mourners and high-profile guests, including several heads of state and government representatives from across Africa. The final burial ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at Raila’s rural home in Bondo, Siaya County.
As the nation continues to grieve, Kalonzo urged Kenyans to honor Raila’s legacy by upholding the values he lived for.
> “Let us carry forward Baba’s dream of a united, just, and prosperous Kenya. That would be the greatest tribute we can give him.
