Arsenal Fans Pay Tribute to Raila Odinga in Emotional Pilgrimage to Bondo
Hundreds of Arsenal fans from across Kenya converged on Bondo this weekend in a touching show of respect for the late Raila Amolo Odinga, whose lifelong passion for the North London club made him one of its most famous and beloved supporters on the African continent.
The fans, clad in red and white jerseys, made a symbolic pilgrimage to Odinga’s final resting place, laying wreaths, scarves, and flags emblazoned with the Arsenal crest. The mood was a mix of solemn reflection and heartfelt celebration, as supporters shared memories of a man who inspired not just political change, but also a deep love for the beautiful game.
“Baba loved Arsenal with his whole heart,” said James Otieno, chairperson of the Arsenal Kenya Supporters Club. “He always believed in the team — through wins and losses alike. Today, we’re here to honour that unwavering loyalty and to say thank you for showing us what true support means.”
The gathering included moments of silence, chants of “Come on you Gunners!”, and a prayer led by local clergy. Attendees also sang some of Raila’s favorite football tunes and projected highlights of Arsenal’s memorable matches on a large outdoor screen.
The event coincided with Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace later this evening — a fixture that many fans said they would watch together in Bondo in Raila’s memory.
“As Arsenal takes on Crystal Palace tonight, we know Baba is watching from above,” said Achieng Odhiambo, a fan who travelled from Mombasa. “We hope the team can deliver a win — not just for the club, but for the spirit of Raila Odinga.”
Though gone, Odinga’s legacy as a political titan and devoted Arsenal fan continues to unite Kenyans across regions and generations. For many, today’s tribute was more than just a football gathering — it was a celebration of passion, perseverance, and the enduring bond between sport and identity.
Gone but forever in our hearts — Raila Amolo Odinga, the Gunner eternal.
