Ange Postecoglou Sacked by Nottingham Forest After Record-Breaking 39-Day Reign

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as Nottingham Forest manager after just 39 days in charge, following the club’s 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea — the shortest managerial reign in Premier League history.

Appointed on 9 September after the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo, Postecoglou’s time at the City Ground ends without a single win in eight matches across all competitions. The Australian managed only two draws and suffered six defeats, with Forest picking up just one point from five Premier League fixtures under his leadership. The club currently sits 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

In a brief statement released late Saturday night, the club confirmed Postecoglou’s departure:

“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect. The club will make no further comment at this time.”

Postecoglou’s Forest tenure began with a 3-0 loss to Arsenal and quickly spiraled downward. The club was eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Championship side Swansea City, drew with Burnley and Real Betis, and suffered further defeats to Midtjylland, Bournemouth, and most recently Chelsea. During the Midtjylland loss, sections of the home crowd turned on the former Tottenham and Celtic boss, chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning.”

The sacking means Forest are now searching for their third manager of the 2025/26 campaign, less than two months into the season. According to sources, Fulham boss Marco Silva is among the leading contenders to take over, with experienced Premier League manager Sean Dyche also under consideration.

Postecoglou’s rapid dismissal highlights the mounting pressure on clubs fighting relegation and continues a turbulent managerial trend at the City Ground, where Forest have now changed head coaches five times in just over a year.

The club is expected to announce a new appointment in the coming days ahead of a crucial league fixture against Crystal Palace next weekend.
