Moi University Electrical Engineering Students Gain Hands-On Experience at KenGen Ngong Wind Farm

 

 Second-year Electrical Engineering students from Moi University recently embarked on an educational tour of the KenGen Ngong Wind Farm, gaining first-hand exposure to one of Kenya’s pioneering renewable energy projects.

The visit to Kenya’s first operational wind power facility offered the students an invaluable opportunity to bridge classroom theory with real-world application. Hosted by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the tour introduced the aspiring engineers to the inner workings of wind turbines, power generation systems, and the integration of renewable energy into the national grid.

“This experience gave us a practical understanding of what we study in class — especially in areas such as power systems, machine dynamics, and renewable energy technologies,” said one of the students. “Seeing how wind energy is harnessed and fed into the grid helped us appreciate the technical challenges and innovations involved.”

Located in Ngong Hills, the wind farm not only symbolizes Kenya’s commitment to clean energy but also serves as a vital learning ground for future energy professionals. During the visit, students interacted with engineers on-site, explored turbine components, and discussed the importance of sustainable power solutions in reducing carbon emissions and meeting national energy demands.
