Spike in Road Accidents Prompts Crackdown by National Police Service

The National Police Service (NPS) has raised alarm over a worrying surge in road accidents across the country, calling for immediate action from motorists, pedestrians, and stakeholders to prevent further loss of life.

In a strongly worded statement, the police cited reckless driving behaviors as the main causes of the deadly trend, including speeding, driver fatigue, dangerous overtaking, drink-driving, and overloading. The NPS emphasized that most of these crashes are entirely preventable if road users adopt safer practices.

"The vast majority of these accidents are preventable if road users change their behavior by avoiding speeding, dangerous overtaking, drink-driving, overloading, driver fatigue, and careless road crossing," the statement read in part.

In response, the police have stepped up operations nationwide aimed at curbing the spike in fatalities. These include intensified speed checks, removal of unroadworthy vehicles from the roads, anti-drug and alcohol patrols, and closer monitoring of compliance among Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Saccos.

"The National Police Service continues to step up efforts including speed monitoring, enforcement against overloading of goods, conducting anti-drink driving operations, removing unlawful lights on motor vehicles, and assessing PSV sacco compliance," the agency said.

Authorities are also urging all road users—drivers, pedestrians, and public transport operators—to take personal responsibility for safety on Kenyan roads.

The NPS further extended heartfelt condolences to families who have lost loved ones in recent road crashes, noting the deep emotional and economic toll such tragedies have on affected communities.

"Road crashes cause immense suffering to the affected families, and every possible measure must be taken to prevent further loss of life," the statement added.

The latest warning comes amid growing concern over rising road traffic fatalities in the country, particularly along major highways and urban areas. The police have pledged to sustain enforcement efforts and work with relevant agencies to enhance public awareness and road safety campaigns.

As investigations into various recent accidents continue, Kenyans are being urged to remain vigilant, obey traffic laws, and report any reckless driving to authorities.
