Siaya Governor James Orengo Makes Public Appearance at Phoebe Asiyo’s Funeral After Prolonged Absence

Siaya Governor James Orengo made a rare public appearance today at the funeral of veteran politician and women’s rights icon Phoebe Asiyo in Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County, putting to rest weeks of speculation about his health and leadership status.

Governor Orengo, who had been noticeably absent from the public scene for several weeks, arrived at the funeral service accompanied by several county officials and political allies. His presence drew attention amid swirling rumors that he had been unwell and had even tendered a resignation letter from his gubernatorial post.

Dressed in a black suit and visibly frail but composed, the governor addressed mourners briefly, paying tribute to Asiyo’s legacy as a trailblazer in Kenyan politics and a champion of women's empowerment.

"Mama Phoebe Asiyo was not only a national leader but also a personal inspiration. Her courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice remain a guiding light for all of us in public service," said Orengo.

His brief speech was met with applause and chants of support from the crowd, many of whom expressed relief at seeing the long-serving politician in public for the first time in over a month.

Reports of Orengo’s ill health began circulating in early July, with unconfirmed claims that he had been hospitalized and had submitted a resignation letter to the Council of Governors. However, his communications team neither confirmed nor denied the reports, further fueling speculation.

Today’s appearance seems to signal a return to active duty, though the governor did not directly address the resignation claims or provide details about his health.

Leaders present at the funeral included ODM party officials, county governors from the Nyanza region, and members of Parliament, who steered clear of the resignation rumors, instead choosing to focus on celebrating the life of the late Asiyo.

Governor Orengo's appearance is likely to calm political jitters in Siaya County, where uncertainty over his status had sparked concerns over county leadership and continuity.

As of now, the Siaya County Government has not issued an official statement regarding the governor’s health or the allegations surrounding his resignation.
