State-of-the-Art Police Sacco Gymnasium Officially Opened at National Police College – Kiganjo

The National Police College – Main Campus, Kiganjo, today witnessed a major milestone in police welfare and wellness following the official opening of a state-of-the-art gymnasium, constructed by the Kenya National Police DT Sacco. The facility was officially inaugurated by the Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya.

The modern gymnasium, designed to accommodate up to 500 trainees, was established to address the growing demand for physical wellness infrastructure within the Police Service. It is fully equipped with cutting-edge fitness equipment including treadmills, stairmasters, dumbbells, barbells, bench press benches, and features changing rooms, bathrooms, and an on-site medical facility—making it a comprehensive wellness and fitness centre for trainees and officers.

In his remarks, Hon. Oparanya praised the Kenya National Police DT Sacco as the best-managed Sacco in the country, lauding its efforts in resource mobilization and financial inclusion across all ranks of the Service. He urged officers to take full advantage of Sacco services and begin planning early for their financial futures.

“The Kenya National Police DT Sacco has once again demonstrated leadership not only in financial empowerment but also in promoting the health and well-being of its members. This gymnasium is a forward-looking investment that speaks to the holistic development of our officers,” said Hon. Oparanya.

Representing the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, the Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Mr. Patrick Tito, SAIG, underscored the critical importance of investing in both the physical and mental wellness of police officers. He noted that the rigors of modern policing require personnel who are not only physically fit but also mentally resilient and emotionally grounded.

“This facility will play a vital role in enhancing the operational performance, stress management, and endurance of our officers. A fit officer is a better officer—more responsive, professional, and in touch with the needs of the communities they serve,” Mr. Tito said.

The event was attended by an array of high-profile guests, including the Principal Secretary for State Department for Co-operatives, Hon. Patrick Kilemi; Chairman of Kenya National Police DT Sacco, Mr. David Mategwa; and Sacco CEO, Mr. Solomon Atsiaya, alongside other board members and staff.

Also present were senior police leadership from the National Police College, including the Commandant, Mr. Nyale Munga, SAIG; Deputy Commandant, Madam Wangeshi Mwangi, AIG; Director of the School of Leadership, Mr. Dominic Musembi, CP; Director of the School of Basic Studies, Mr. Fredrick Konya, CP; and Mr. Paul Rioba, CP, who heads the Faculty of Police Professionalism.

The gymnasium is expected to serve both trainee officers and staff at the institution, marking a progressive shift in the integration of wellness and performance in the country’s policing model.
