Kenya’s reputation as a global eco-tourism and adventure destination received a major boost this past weekend with the launch of the "Magical Kenya Trails – Aberdare Edition", a new initiative by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) under the Magical Kenya brand.

The four-day event, held from July 3rd to 6th at Aberdare National Park, drew hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and hikers from across the country and beyond. The program offered participants a rare chance to explore the rugged beauty and rich biodiversity of the Aberdare ranges, as well as immerse themselves in the region’s cultural and historical treasures.

At the heart of the experience was a guided hike to Le Satima Peak, the highest point in the Aberdares, standing at 4,001 meters above sea level. Beginning from Shamata Gate, the trek provided sweeping views of the Laikipia Plateau and even the snow-dusted summits of nearby Mount Kenya.

Beyond the summit trail, adventurers also explored hidden forest paths leading to iconic waterfalls such as Karuru, Gura, and Chania Falls. The journey included historical explorations of Mau Mau hideouts, Queen’s Cave, and stops at various conservation projects aimed at protecting the region’s rare flora and fauna.

Speaking during the launch, KTB CEO June Chepkemei emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable travel and positioning Kenya as a premium destination for eco-conscious adventurers.

“This is more than a hike—it is a celebration of Kenya’s beauty, history, and commitment to conservation,” said Chepkemei. “We want to show the world that Kenya is more than beaches and safaris. Our landscapes, our people, and our stories offer unforgettable experiences for every kind of traveler.”

Participants were encouraged to embrace sustainability by using eco-friendly gear, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting local communities through home-stay options, local guiding services, and artisanal products.

The Magical Kenya Trails are part of a wider effort by KTB to diversify the country's tourism offerings, particularly in the wake of growing global demand for outdoor, low-impact, and culturally immersive experiences. Following the success of the Aberdare edition, similar events are planned in other destinations, including Mount Kenya, Mount Longonot, and additional scenic trails across Kenya’s vast and varied landscape.

The Aberdare Trails initiative not only celebrated nature but also served as a platform to raise awareness on the importance of conservation, environmental stewardship, and community-driven tourism—a fitting tribute to Kenya’s vision for a sustainable tourism future.
