Kabete Affordable Housing Project Takes Shape, Promises 1,140 New Homes and Economic Uplift for Kiambu County

The Kabete Affordable Housing Project in Kikuyu Constituency is fast becoming a landmark initiative under the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), as construction accelerates and the site transforms into a hive of activity.

Launched in July 2024 and spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, the project is designed to deliver 1,140 modern and affordable housing units across nine residential blocks. It targets the growing housing demand in the Nairobi Metropolitan region, particularly among middle- and low-income earners.

As of this month, more than 400 workers are actively engaged on site, with significant strides made in slab casting, masonry, internal wall partitioning, electrical installations and plumbing. According to project officials, progress is ahead of schedule, and the energy on site reflects the urgency to meet housing goals outlined in BETA.

“The momentum we’re seeing here is a testament to the Government’s commitment to delivering quality, affordable housing for Kenyans,” said a senior project engineer on site. “It’s not just about buildings — it’s about building communities and uplifting livelihoods.”

In addition to residential units, the development will feature a commercial hub named MUD BLOCK, which recently entered the excavation phase. Once complete, it will house retail outlets, service providers, and small businesses, making it a central economic and social space for residents.

The socio-economic ripple effect is already being felt across Kiambu County. The project has created hundreds of direct jobs, with more expected in ancillary services and trades. Local contractors and suppliers have also been tapped, further stimulating the region’s economy.

Residents and community leaders have welcomed the project, noting its potential to address the acute housing shortage while opening up new economic opportunities.

“This development is not just changing our skyline, it’s changing lives,” said a local community representative. “We’re seeing young people getting skilled jobs, businesses getting contracts, and a general uplift in the local economy.”

The Kabete Affordable Housing Project is part of a broader national drive to deliver over 200,000 housing units annually, as envisioned in the Kenya Kwanza administration’s BETA framework. The government aims to ensure that every Kenyan has access to decent, dignified, and affordable housing, while stimulating industrial growth, creating employment, and reducing urban slums.

With construction well underway and the first phase of housing units expected to be complete in 2026, the Kabete project is poised to be a flagship model for inclusive urban development in Kenya.
