Invest in Kakamega, Build Kakamega Through Sports
Kakamega County is poised to take center stage in Kenya’s sports and tourism landscape as Governor Fernandes Barasa officially flagged off high school teams heading into the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) regional championships. The four-day competition, which kicked off today, will run until July 12 and is expected to attract athletes and spectators from across the region.
In a colorful ceremony held ahead of the games, Governor Barasa presented team kits to the student-athletes and expressed unwavering confidence in their preparation and competitive spirit. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to using sports as a catalyst for youth development, regional pride, and economic growth.
“Our athletes are not just here to win medals—they are ambassadors of Kakamega’s potential. These events are a gateway to promoting tourism and creating jobs for our people,” Barasa said.
Kakamega County has long been regarded as a cradle of sporting talent, and this year it is stepping further into the limelight. Following the regional games, the county will host the national KSSSA championships and the East Africa Secondary School Games (FEASSA) in August—two major events that are expected to significantly boost Kakamega’s profile as a sports hub in Kenya and the wider East African region.
The Governor highlighted the strategic role of sports in driving socio-economic transformation. “We are investing heavily in modern sports infrastructure and support systems to make Kakamega a destination of choice for sports tourism,” he added.
Local businesses are already preparing for the expected influx of visitors, with stakeholders in the hospitality, transport, and retail sectors anticipating increased demand during the sporting events.
Residents and guests are also encouraged to explore Kakamega’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions, including the famed Kakamega Forest, one of the last remnants of tropical rainforest in Kenya.
As thousands gather in the county over the coming weeks, Kakamega stands ready—not just to host competitions—but to showcase itself as a vibrant hub where sports and tourism go hand in hand.
