In a stunning development that has left many Nairobi residents talking, a feared loan shark operating in the Eastlands area has shut down his operations after one of his long-time debtors reportedly walked away debt-free.

The lender, who has been in the business for over a decade, was known for aggressive collection tactics and intimidating methods that kept his borrowers under constant fear.

The incident began two weeks ago when a 40-year-old matatu driver known as Mzee Kevo walked into the loan shark’s kiosk and asked to clear his records. According to witnesses, he had borrowed a modest sum five months earlier but had been unable to meet the harsh repayment terms. Interest had ballooned the debt far beyond the original amount, and he had already lost a television and a sofa set to forced recovery.

What happened next was unexpected.

Instead of demanding more property or money, the loan shark reportedly looked at Kevo for a few moments, then stood up and tore the man’s debt record in half without saying a word. He then went into the back room of his structure and began packing up files, receipts, and posters. By the end of that same afternoon, he had taken down his business sign and removed all remaining furniture from the premises.

“He just looked like he had seen something,” said one boda boda rider who had been watching from across the street. “One minute he was furious, the next he was packing.”

Several neighbors said the lender has not returned since that day. His phone line is off and his regular enforcers, who usually walked the streets reminding people to pay, have not been seen. to read more click here
