Celebrated Music Artist and Presidential Candidate Reuben Kigame Urges Disability Inclusion in Education at Kenyatta University

Celebrated music artist and presidential candidate Reuben Kigame has called for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in education, urging parents across Africa to stop hiding children with disabilities and instead support their academic journeys.

Speaking at Kenyatta University, where he joined the university choir for a special performance, Kigame reflected emotionally on his personal journey, noting it was a full-circle moment to stand and sing at the institution where he graduated over 34 years ago.

“I believe Kenyatta University is one of the greatest and most inclusive institutions, not just in Kenya, but in the world. Back when I was a student, there were no computers, but KU staff ensured I had student support to help me access and read books,” Kigame shared. “Today, I stand as living proof that anyone — regardless of ability — can go to school and graduate with a PhD.”

Kigame, who has built a successful career in music, media, and social advocacy, used the platform to inspire and challenge parents to invest in the education of children living with disabilities. “They too, can graduate. They too, can lead,” he said.

Hinting at his presidential ambitions, Kigame told the gathering, “I have achieved a lot in media, in music, and in social justice. There’s only one thing left for me — to become your next president.”

He  further noted that the  government should create more jobs for the Kenyatta University students graduating and not  students living with disability.
