Poultry farming can yield significant profits when done correctly—something Winnie Cheruiyot from Tumbelion village in Kaplong, Bomet County, has experienced herself.

Cheruiyot embarked on her poultry farming journey in 2015 after purchasing 300 chicks from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO).

By 2021, following extensive training in poultry care—including brooding methods, feeding, disease control, and keeping records—she was certified to distribute KALRO’s enhanced chicken breeds.

“After completing the training, I teamed up with KALRO. I built a chicken house that met their inspection requirements,” she says.

Her initial delivery from KALRO consisted of 500 KC1 chicks that were just a day old, 300 of which were hens. When they started laying eggs, she sold them to nearby farmers.
