Governor Natembeya Reaffirms Commitment to Establishing a University in Trans Nzoia
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering on a key promise in his Ten-Point Agenda—the establishment of a fully-fledged university within the county.
Governor Natembeya on Wednesday assessed progress made by the Kitale Implementation Committee, which has been mandated to lead efforts in the creation of a University College in collaboration with Kibabii University.
“One of the key promises I made to the people of Trans Nzoia was to ensure our county secures its own university. Today, I had the privilege of evaluating the work done by the Implementation Committee, and I’m encouraged by the momentum we are building,” said Governor Natembeya.
During the engagement, the Governor announced a major step forward, confirming that the committee would now initiate formal engagements with Kibabii University. This process is expected to lead to the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the drafting of essential statutory instruments to guide the next phase of implementation.
The meeting was chaired by Professor Masibo Lumala, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Implementation Committee. Prof. Lumala briefed the Governor on a comprehensive Taskforce Report, which had earlier gathered public input and outlined legal and procedural pathways for the establishment of the institution.
“Professor Lumala’s insights, drawn from the Taskforce Report, were both timely and instructive. The report reflects the hopes and aspirations of the people of Trans Nzoia and presents a clear roadmap for realizing this ambitious goal,” the Governor noted.
Governor Natembeya emphasized that the establishment of a local university is not just about infrastructure, but about investing in the intellectual and economic future of the county.
“This university will serve as a centre of excellence in education, research, and innovation. It will provide local students with access to higher education closer to home, while also stimulating the local economy and creating opportunities for growth,” he added.
In attendance during the strategic deliberations were key county stakeholders, including:
-
Janerose Mutama, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education
-
Dr. Margaret Matisi, Secretary to the Committee
-
Dr. David Lwangale, Committee Member
-
Dr. Evelyn Amadi, Committee Member
-
Ms. Dianah Wabwile, County Solicitor
Governor Natembeya concluded by pledging his full support and goodwill to the Committee as they embark on this critical phase of institution-building.
“Together, we remain committed to fulfilling this promise and bringing a university home to Trans Nzoia. It’s not just a dream—it’s a goal within reach.”
