Chaos in Eldoret as Peaceful Protest Turns Violent Amid Rising Tensions

At the heart of Eldoret town, what was anticipated to be a peaceful demonstration turned into a day of chaos and fear, as violent confrontations broke out between demonstrators and suspected hired goons. The tension quickly escalated, forcing police officers to intervene in an effort to restore calm and disperse the unruly groups.

Businesses across Eldoret were heavily affected, with many traders opting to close their shops in fear of looting and destruction. Streets that are normally bustling with activity were deserted as both customers and business owners stayed away.

“What I'm seeing here in town is not fair,” said Isaacs, a local trader, speaking to Hubz Media. “People are being chased in the streets, businesses have stopped since morning, nobody is doing business.”

Several people were reported injured in the chaos, with some sustaining serious injuries that required hospitalization. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of violence, including a brutal assault by goons on a man in broad daylight.

“This demonstration has made us close our businesses,” said another businessman. “The hired goons have caused serious injuries. I saw a man being beaten on the head by these goons.”

Despite the tension, not all areas in Eldoret were affected equally. In certain parts of the town, businesses continued as usual, although cautiously.

“According to me today the business is okay, but not that much,” said a vendor in the CBD. “I stay with fear because you don't know who's on your side. These goons don’t beat you for nothing—it depends on how you talk to them.”

Residents have now called on the government and local authorities to take urgent action to restore peace and bring an end to the demonstrations so that normal life can resume.

The protests are part of a larger nationwide movement marking one year since the deadly anti-Finance Bill demonstrations of June 2024, which saw dozens of Kenyans killed and hundreds injured. This year’s anniversary protests have reignited deep frustrations over economic hardships, governance, and public safety.
