Uasin Gishu County Launches Dorper Sheep Distribution in Kapsaos to Boost Livestock Productivity

In a significant step toward enhancing livestock productivity and rural livelihoods, the County Government of Uasin Gishu has officially launched the distribution of Dorper sheep to farmers in Kapsaos Ward. The initiative aims to improve livestock genetics, strengthen household incomes, and promote sustainable agricultural development.

The launch event was presided over by Deputy Governor H.E. Evans Kapkea, who was joined by Chief Officer for Livestock Development Nixon Cheplong and Kapsaos MCA Isaac Samoei. The project forms part of the county’s wider livestock improvement agenda, which prioritizes the distribution of high-value breeds to enhance meat production and resilience in local farming systems.

“We are empowering our farmers with quality breeds that can increase meat production, adapt well to local conditions, and yield better returns,” said Deputy Governor Kapkea during the event. “This initiative not only supports food security but also drives rural economic growth.”

The Dorper breed, known for its fast growth rate, disease resistance, and high market value, was selected due to its proven suitability for the region's climate and its potential to rapidly uplift smallholder farmers.

Chief Officer Cheplong emphasized the importance of improved livestock genetics, noting that the Dorper sheep distribution program will be expanded to other wards as part of a comprehensive county-wide livestock development strategy.

“This is a high-impact initiative aimed at improving the quality of our livestock. The Dorper breed will significantly contribute to the transformation of sheep farming in Uasin Gishu,” said Cheplong.

Area MCA Isaac Samoei lauded the county administration for its consistent efforts to invest in agriculture, which remains the economic backbone of many rural households. He urged beneficiaries to adopt proper animal husbandry practices to maximize the potential of the Dorper breed and ensure the long-term sustainability of the program.

The initiative is aligned with Governor Jonathan Bii’s “Nguzo Kumi” development blueprint, which places a strong focus on agricultural transformation, economic empowerment, and inclusive service delivery.
