NACADA Arrests Suspect in Nairobi Shisha Crackdown After Health CS Suspends Nicotine Licences

One person was arrested on Saturday during a shisha raid at an entertainment joint in Hurlingham, Nairobi, as part of a nationwide crackdown by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on the abuse of nicotine products.

The operation follows a directive by Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, who suspended all existing nicotine licences, citing increased abuse and lack of regulation around emerging nicotine-based products.

During the raid, Nicholas Kosgei, NACADA’s Head of Enforcement, said a significant amount of shisha products were seized at Ledet Bar and Restaurant along Argwings Kodhek Road.

“We want to ensure that our people and future generations do not continue consuming harmful nicotine products,” Kosgei stated.

He further revealed that the enforcement operation will be nationwide, targeting illegal distributors and outlets violating the ban on shisha and related substances.

New Licensing Requirements

In line with the Health Ministry’s new directive, all current licence holders dealing in nicotine products will be required to reapply within 21 days and comply fully with the law. The move is intended to tighten regulation and curb the rising trend of nicotine abuse, particularly among the youth.

Rising Nicotine Use Among Teens

A recent report, cited by The Eastleigh Voice, has raised concern over the increasing use of tobacco and nicotine products among adolescents in Kenya. According to the findings:

1 in 17 students reported vaping nicotine.

  • 1 in 24 students admitted to using nicotine pouches.
  • The report highlighted a worrying trend of nicotine uptake among young girls, signaling a need for urgent intervention.

NACADA and the Ministry of Health say they are intensifying public awareness and enforcement to protect youth from early exposure to harmful substances and reduce the burden of addiction-related health issues in the future.
