Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has today issued a powerful message of support to the youth of Kenya, declaring solidarity with their growing calls for justice, accountability, and meaningful change. The statement, released during the nationally recognized "Mask Friday," underscores a moment of moral clarity and resistance in the face of rising socio-political tensions.
"We are living in a time where the courage of our youth is challenging the conscience of a nation," said Governor Natembeya. "They are unmasking injustice, refusing to be silenced, and standing where truth speaks louder than fear."
"Mask Friday," a symbolic day of protest marked by youth-led demonstrations, artistic expression, and the donning of face masks as emblems of resistance, has captured national attention in recent weeks. Originating from student protests, it has grown into a broader movement highlighting government accountability, economic reform, and youth inclusion in leadership.
Governor Natembeya, a former regional commissioner known for his no-nonsense leadership style and strong stance on integrity, emphasized that true leadership is not about maintaining comfort but confronting uncomfortable truths.
“It is no longer an option to remain silent. Our youth are asking the hard questions. They’re holding the mirror to all of us in public service, and we must not turn away. We must listen, act, and walk with them—not against them.”
The Governor called on national and county governments to open channels for genuine dialogue with young people, address the issues raised—from unemployment and corruption to police brutality—and ensure that peaceful protest remains protected under Kenya's Constitution.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices already made by many young Kenyans who have faced intimidation and hardship in their quest for a better future.
"Proudly, I stand on the right side of history, not because it is easy, but because it is just. I urge my fellow leaders to join me. Let us build a country that our children will not have to protest against."
Governor Natembeya ended his statement by affirming that Trans-Nzoia County will continue to create safe spaces for youth engagement, civic education, and economic empowerment.
“Let us wear the mask today not to hide, but to reveal the truth. Let Mask Friday be remembered as the day when Kenya began to listen.”
