Democracy for Citizens Party Shifts Nairobi Headquarters Amid Government Frustration

The newly launched Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has abruptly relocated its Nairobi headquarters from Riara Centre on Riara Road to new premises on Musa Gitau Road, just days after its official launch.

Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala cited ongoing frustrations from the Kenya Kwanza government as the primary reason behind the sudden move. “We are being frustrated at every move that we make—from office spaces to public venues,” Malala stated.

The DCP held a low-key launch event in Kilimani but was forced to postpone its major national launch, originally scheduled for June 4, 2025, at Kasarani Indoor Arena. The postponement followed government denial of access to the Kasarani venue.

In response, Gachagua assured supporters that the venue change was temporary. “Our mission is bigger than buildings and bureaucracy,” he said.

Political analysts observe that Kenyan politics remains heavily influenced by power struggles, party defections, and government control over public institutions. A recent study by the Institute of Governance and Development highlights the challenges emerging parties face, especially when perceived as threats by the ruling coalition.

The unfolding developments for DCP underscore the complex landscape for new political formations seeking to establish themselves in Kenya’s competitive political arena.
