Uasin Gishu County Records Major Health Milestones: Drop in Mortality Rates and Renewed HIV Fight

Uasin Gishu County is making significant progress in its healthcare delivery, marked by a notable reduction in circumcision-related deaths and strengthened efforts to combat HIV/AIDS and associated stigma. Under the stewardship of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, the county is prioritizing inclusive, quality, and culturally sensitive health services.

Speaking during a recent health forum, County Commissioner Dr. Eddyson Nyale revealed a sharp decline in circumcision-related fatalities—from 25 deaths last year to just 8 in 2024. This achievement follows a series of safety and awareness campaigns targeting a long-standing cultural practice in the region.

"Through targeted community sensitization, tetanus vaccinations, health screenings, and increased involvement of elders and health personnel, we've managed to make a remarkable impact," said Dr. Nyale. “These efforts are saving lives and fostering safer traditions.”

In addition to reducing mortality rates, the county is scaling up its response to HIV/AIDS. With a prevalence rate of 3.7%, approximately 41,500 residents are living with HIV. Alarmingly, adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 continue to account for a growing share of new infections.

To counter this trend, Uasin Gishu is enhancing HIV testing, prevention, and treatment services, while increasing outreach to men and boys—demographics that often have limited engagement with healthcare systems.

Governor Chelilim emphasized the need for an inclusive approach. "We must confront not only the virus but also the stigma that comes with it," he said. "Our goal is a community that supports, not shuns, people living with HIV."

Stigma remains a pressing concern, with the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022 revealing that 14.7% of women and 19% of men in the county still hold discriminatory views toward people living with HIV. To address this, the county is rolling out education programs and community-based interventions aimed at promoting acceptance and support.

Uasin Gishu is also addressing related health threats, including co-infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and syphilis. The syphilis positivity rate among pregnant women receiving antenatal care is projected to climb to 5.6% by 2025, underscoring the need for vigilant screening and intervention.

With a renewed focus on comprehensive and affordable healthcare, the county government is working to meet the needs of its diverse population—ensuring that no resident is left behind.

As Uasin Gishu continues to invest in health infrastructure and community education, the county is positioning itself as a model for effective, culturally aware healthcare reform in Kenya.
