PS Charles Hinga Steers Landmark Mukuru Housing Project to Life

NAIROBI Kenya – Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga on Monday led the official commissioning of 1080 affordable housing units at the New Mukuru Housing Estate marking a defining moment in Kenya’s quest to provide decent homes for all.


Hinga who has been instrumental in designing and implementing the Affordable Housing Programme described the event as a dream come true for over 1000 families who are transitioning from informal settlements to modern dignified living.


“Today is not just about buildings. It is about dignity opportunity and inclusion” said PS Hinga. “These families now have homes they can proudly call their own and will pay for them through a rent to own plan over the next 30 years.”


The event was graced by President William Ruto and Cabinet Secretary for Lands Public Works Housing and Urban Development Hon Alice Wahome both of whom applauded Hinga’s leadership in driving the government’s affordable housing agenda.


President Ruto termed the occasion one of the most consequential in his political career as he handed over keys to the first cohort of beneficiaries.


“These are not just keys to open doors or houses these are keys to homes” said the President. “This is Kenya’s Bottom Up Moment. We are making bold and transformative decisions that will change lives forever.”


The New Mukuru Housing Estate which will ultimately comprise 13248 housing units is the largest real estate development in Kenya’s history. Lot 1 now completed features 5616 bedsitters while Lot 2 will deliver 3024 one bedroom units and Lot 3 will host 4608 two bedroom units.


CS Wahome praised the initiative as a game changer for urban development noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to equity and social justice.


“This is not just infrastructure. This is social transformation” said CS Wahome. “Through the Affordable Housing Programme we are building communities and lifting thousands out of poverty.”


PS Hinga further emphasized the economic impact of the project noting that over 200 similar developments are currently underway across the country employing more than 200000 Kenyans most of them youth.


“The housing sector is now a driver of jobs investment and national pride. Mukuru is proof that when we invest in people we build the nation” he said.


As the lead technocrat behind the affordable housing initiative PS Charles Hinga continues to play a pivotal role in shaping policy mobilizing resources and delivering results. The New Mukuru Housing Estate stands as a testament to his dedication and to the government’s resolve to ensure every Kenyan has access to a decent home.
