Kuria West, Migori County – In a bold step toward addressing Kenya’s housing deficit, President William Ruto today officially launched the Kehancha Affordable Housing Project, accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga. The event, held in Kuria West, marked a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing commitment to provide decent and affordable housing for all Kenyans.
The Kehancha project will deliver 298 housing units alongside commercial spaces aimed at empowering local small businesses and creating sustainable urban settlements. This project is part of the broader Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) being spearheaded by the State Department for Housing under PS Hinga’s visionary leadership.
PS Hinga, a key architect of the Affordable Housing initiative, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to building inclusive communities while also stimulating local economies. In his address, he emphasized that the project in Kuria West is not just about shelter, but about restoring dignity, creating jobs, and unlocking economic potential at the grassroots.
> “Housing is more than four walls and a roof. It is about dignity, opportunity, and nation-building. We are working to ensure that every Kenyan—no matter where they are—can live in a decent, affordable home,” said PS Hinga.
The Principal Secretary also highlighted the program’s national economic impact, noting the thousands of jobs being created across the country through similar projects. He assured residents of Migori that local youth, artisans, and women would be prioritized for employment opportunities during the construction phase.
President Ruto echoed PS Hinga’s sentiments, affirming that housing is a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). He commended the Ministry of Housing for its rapid and structured rollout of projects and pledged continued government support to ensure every county reaps the benefits of this transformative agenda.
Kehancha now joins a growing list of towns benefiting from the AHP, alongside Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Embu, and Machakos, in what is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious public housing programs in Africa.
