Kenya’s Bold Fight Against Cervical Cancer as Early HPV Vaccination Offers Hope

Cervical cancer, a preventable yet deadly disease, remains a pressing health crisis in Kenya. With approximately 40 cases per 100,000 women, the country’s burden far exceeds the World Health Organization’s (WHO) target of four per 100,000. Every day, the disease claims the lives of 10 women, a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.


Dr. Catherine Nyongesa, a renowned oncologist and Managing Director of the Texas Cancer Centre, has emphasized that cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable. “We need to increase the uptake of screening and ensure women are linked to care through a strengthened referral system. This single-visit approach can save lives,” she said.


Since its introduction in 2019, the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has emerged as a game-changer. The vaccine is most effective when administered to girls between the ages of 10 and 14, before exposure to the virus, which is primarily transmitted through sexual contact. Despite this progress, vaccine uptake remains below target due to cultural misconceptions, logistical barriers, and limited awareness.


According to the Ministry of Health, 3.3 million girls have received the first dose of the vaccine, while 2.3 million have completed the second dose. The government has made the vaccine accessible at all health facilities and is working to address challenges, particularly in rural areas, through community outreach and education programs.
