Journalist Lorna Abuga Meets Eldoret Polytechnic Trainee Abigael Chepkemboi, Boma Yangu Housing Beneficiary

Journalist and Mental Wellness Advocate Lorna Abuga has met Abigael Chepkemboi, a trainee pursuing a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at The Eldoret National Polytechnic, who is among the beneficiaries of the government's Boma Yangu Affordable Housing Programme.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Abuga to interact with Abigael and learn about her experience as one of the beneficiaries of the affordable housing initiative, which seeks to make homeownership more accessible to ordinary Kenyans.

Abigael's story comes following the launch of the Boma Yangu Affordable Housing Programme by President William Samoei Ruto on the eve of Mashujaa Day in October 2026 at Pioneer Estate in Eldoret City.

The launch marked a significant milestone in the government's efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities beyond Nairobi and other major urban centres, bringing the initiative closer to residents of Eldoret and the wider North Rift region.

Abigael, who is currently undertaking technical training in Electrical Engineering at The Eldoret National Polytechnic, represents the aspirations of young Kenyans seeking opportunities to improve their livelihoods while building a secure future.

Her participation in the housing programme highlights the importance of extending affordable homeownership opportunities to young people, including students and those preparing to transition into the job market.

For Abuga, the meeting with Abigael offered an opportunity to engage with a beneficiary whose experience provides a human perspective on the government's affordable housing agenda.

The Boma Yangu programme is among the key pillars of President Ruto's economic transformation agenda, with the government seeking to address the country's housing deficit while creating employment opportunities through the construction industry.

Apart from providing decent and affordable homes, the initiative is expected to stimulate economic activities, create opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers and support businesses involved in the supply of construction materials and other services.

The Pioneer Estate development is also part of the broader urban transformation taking place in Eldoret, a rapidly growing city whose demand for decent housing continues to increase alongside population growth and expanding economic activities.

Abigael's experience adds a youthful dimension to the affordable housing conversation, demonstrating the importance of ensuring that young people are included in national development programmes that seek to improve living standards and expand economic opportunities.

The meeting between Abuga and Abigael also highlights the value of storytelling in bringing forward individual experiences and giving visibility to beneficiaries of major government initiatives.

As the affordable housing programme continues to attract attention across the country, the experiences of beneficiaries such as Abigael are expected to remain central to conversations about homeownership, youth empowerment and inclusive development.
