Elizabeth Kailemia Joins Push for Enhanced Security Along Key Transport Corridors

Meru Woman Representative Elizabeth Kailemia has joined parliamentary calls for strengthened security along key transport corridors and border areas following concerns over cattle rustling, boda boda-related killings and inadequate security resources in Taita Taveta County.

Kailemia participated in a meeting of the National Assembly Committee on Regional Integration, chaired by Hon. Irene Mayaka, which engaged Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo on persistent security challenges affecting communities and transport routes.

During the Thursday, October 29, 2026 engagement, lawmakers raised concerns over the limited resources available to police officers to facilitate effective patrols, as well as strained relations between security agencies and local communities in Taveta.

The Committee called for enhanced intelligence gathering and surveillance, improved police mobility, timely investigations and accountability for security-related crimes.

Members also emphasised the need for interventions to support families affected by killings and other insecurity-related incidents.

The discussions further extended to regional development and educational opportunities, with legislators calling for greater awareness and improved access to LAPSSET scholarship opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged and marginalised communities.

The lawmakers underscored the importance of integrating security interventions with infrastructure development and community inclusion, noting that safe transport corridors are essential to regional trade, economic growth and cross-border cooperation.

Dr Omollo welcomed the engagement and encouraged legislators to continue working closely with his department in advancing security, regional integration and development across the East African region.

Kailemia's participation highlights the role of parliamentary engagement in addressing security concerns that affect communities, livelihoods, trade and access to essential opportunities.
