Cheruiyot Mocks Opposition Over Sifuna Presidential Bid, Says Ichung’wah Could Lead Ruto’s Camp
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has taken a swipe at the emerging opposition political formations, suggesting that President William Ruto's allies would be comfortable allowing National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah to take charge of their political campaigns if the opposition settles on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its presidential candidate.
In a pointed political statement, Cheruiyot questioned the opposition's possible choice of Sifuna as its flagbearer, while appearing to dismiss the prospect of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua serving as the coalition's chief campaigner.
Cheruiyot said that should the opposition settle on Sifuna as its presidential candidate and Gachagua as the lead campaigner, allies of President Ruto would have no objection to allowing the Head of State to concentrate on his development agenda while Ichung’wah leads their political mobilisation.
"If this clueless opposition settles on Edwin Sifuna as the presidential candidate and Rigathi as lead campaigner, we will respectfully ask President William Samoei Ruto to focus on the serious work of transforming the Republic and allow Kimani Ichung’wah to lead us in the little task ahead," Cheruiyot stated.
He added in Swahili, "Hiyo ni game ya kucheza with eyes closed," suggesting that he considers the proposed opposition arrangement an easy political contest for the President's camp.
The remarks signal growing political exchanges between leaders allied to President Ruto and opposition figures as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The comments come against the backdrop of renewed debate over the opposition's presidential ticket following political engagements involving Sifuna, Gachagua and other opposition leaders.
On Friday, October 30, Sifuna officially unveiled the Linda Mwananchi Party Movement in Nairobi, bringing together several opposition figures, including Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa.
