Mombasa Woman Arrested Over Viral X Posts as DCI Cites National Security Concerns

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a Mombasa woman over allegations of misusing social media by allegedly sharing sensitive information involving the movements of protected persons.

The suspect, identified by the DCI as Halima Ngache, also known as Princess Halima, was arrested on Tuesday during an intelligence-led operation in Kadzandani, Nyali Sub-County.

According to the investigative agency, the arrest followed investigations linking Halima to an X account (formerly Twitter) that allegedly published sensitive information concerning the movements of protected individuals.

The DCI said investigators are treating the matter as a potential national security concern and that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged posts.

"The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment," the agency said in a statement.

Authorities did not disclose the specific content of the posts or identify the protected persons allegedly affected, saying the matter remains under active investigation.

The arrest comes amid increased scrutiny of online activity as security agencies monitor the growing influence of social media on public discourse and national security.

While reaffirming that the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the DCI reminded Kenyans that the right carries responsibilities and should be exercised within the limits of the law.

The agency urged social media users to avoid sharing information that could compromise the safety of protected persons or threaten public security.

As investigations continue, the DCI has appealed to members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities through its #FichuaKwaDCI platform, the toll-free number 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations and processing are completed, where the allegations against her will be addressed through the legal process. The arrest underscores the increasing focus by authorities on the use of digital platforms and serves as a reminder that online conduct may attract legal scrutiny where investigators believe it raises security concerns.
