Speaker Wetang’ula Hands Over Sh2 Million MPs’ Contribution to Support Needy Students at Thika High School
The National Assembly Speaker, Dr. Moses Wetang’ula, on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, formally handed over a Sh2 million bursary cheque contributed by Members of Parliament to support needy and deserving students at Thika High School.
The event, held at the Parliament Buildings, saw the Speaker host the Chief Principal of Thika High School, who was accompanied by the school’s student president and two deputies. During their visit, the students also had the opportunity to observe proceedings from the National Assembly gallery.
The bursary funds will benefit learners in Grade 10, Form 3, and Form 4, with the aim of easing the financial burden on vulnerable students and promoting access to education.
The contribution by MPs, described as a gesture of goodwill from “friends of the school,” was made in fulfillment of a commitment pledged during the institution’s 70th anniversary celebrations held on 15th May 2026, which were graced by President William Ruto.
During the anniversary event, legislators committed a total of Sh12 million, with Sh10 million earmarked for infrastructure development and Sh2 million designated for bursaries. The infrastructure component will be channeled through the Old Boys Association Fund to support long-term development projects at the school.
While addressing the students in Parliament, Speaker Wetang’ula commended the initiative, noting that it reflects Parliament’s commitment to supporting education and nurturing future leaders.
He also highlighted the presence of a distinguished alumnus of Thika High School serving as the Clerk of the National Assembly, encouraging students to take pride in the school’s legacy.
The Speaker urged the learners to remain disciplined, work hard, and focus on academic excellence, emphasizing that education remains the most powerful tool for transforming lives.
The visiting students expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Parliament, describing the experience as inspiring and motivating.
