Roysambu parliamentary hopeful Mugambi Ndirangu has ignited fresh debate over the rising cost of living after calling on the government to immediately scrap landing costs charged on petroleum products to help bring down fuel prices.
Speaking passionately during a meeting with residents in Roysambu Constituency, Ndirangu said millions of Kenyans are being pushed to the edge by the soaring prices of fuel, transport, food, and other basic commodities.
According to the aspiring legislator, fuel has become the heartbeat of the economy, and any increase directly hurts ordinary wananchi trying to survive tough economic times.
“Every Kenyan is feeling the pain. From matatu fares to food prices in the market, everything shoots up when fuel prices rise. The government must remove unnecessary landing costs and give citizens breathing space,” Ndirangu said amid cheers from residents.
He argued that reducing taxes and extra charges imposed on imported fuel would not only lower transport costs but also ease pressure on small businesses, traders, and struggling families.
Residents who attended the gathering echoed his sentiments, saying life has become unbearable as the prices of essential commodities continue to climb.
“Business is slow and customers are complaining every day. If fuel prices come down, everything else will improve,” said one trader at the meeting.
Ndirangu further challenged policymakers to stop ignoring the struggles of ordinary Kenyans and instead focus on practical solutions that can stabilize the economy and restore hope among citizens.
His remarks come at a time when Kenyans across the country continue to voice frustration over the high cost of living, with fuel prices remaining a major concern for households and businesses alike.
The government has yet to officially respond to the proposal, but the conversation around fuel taxation and economic relief is quickly gaining momentum among wananchi.
