Shock in Nakuru: Eight Students Arrested After Deadly Dormitory Fire at Utumishi Girls Senior School
A devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, has left Kenya in mourning after 16 students lost their lives in one of the country’s deadliest school tragedies in recent years.
According to a press release issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, the fire broke out on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the school’s Meline Waithera Dormitory. Authorities confirmed that the first floor of the two-storey dormitory was extensively damaged while the ground floor remained largely intact.
The National Police Service said a multi-agency emergency response team swiftly responded to the incident, with support from the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Red Cross, Nakuru County Government, Kenya Forest Service, and other agencies.
A specialized homicide investigation unit has since taken over the case, with forensic experts combing through the scene to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Investigators are examining burn patterns, electrical systems, and possible accelerants as part of the ongoing probe.
In a dramatic twist, detectives revealed that eight students have been identified as persons of interest in connection with what authorities suspect may have been a planned arson attack. The students have reportedly been arrested and are currently in police custody as investigators continue recording statements and reviewing CCTV footage.
The dormitory reportedly housed 135 double-decker beds spread across 12 cubicles on the upper floor, raising concerns about congestion and student safety in boarding schools.
The bodies of the deceased students were moved to Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital Mortuary pending post-mortem examinations and formal identification.
The tragedy has sparked grief and outrage across the country, with parents, education stakeholders, and leaders demanding answers and stronger safety measures in schools.
In its statement, the National Police Service conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to ensure justice is served.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
