Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei Condemns Violence at Kikuyu Rally, Calls for Immediate Action
Kiprotich Cherargei has strongly condemned the violence and destruction reported during a political gathering held in Kikuyu Town earlier today, calling for swift investigations and accountability from those involved.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the senator criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of fostering divisive and confrontational politics. Cherargei alleged that the meeting was characterized by unrest that led to injuries, looting of businesses, and damage to property.
“I wish a quick recovery to all Kenyans who were injured and stand in solidarity with business owners who suffered losses during the chaos,” said Cherargei. He further urged that organizers of the rally be held financially responsible for the damages incurred.
The senator also raised concerns about what he described as a serious security lapse, questioning how individuals at the event allegedly gained access to police gear, military-style attire, and other restricted equipment. He called on the Kenya Police Service, under the leadership of the Inspector General, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to immediately investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
“We must uphold the rule of law. Any acts of violence, intimidation, or criminality must be addressed firmly and without delay,” he stated.
Cherargei also criticized the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), accusing it of inaction amid rising political tensions. He warned that failure to address such incidents could heighten the risk of electoral violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Authorities have yet to release an official report detailing the events in Kikuyu Town, but investigations are expected as pressure mounts from political leaders and the public for accountability and restoration of order.
