“‘Mimi Niko Kadi, Je Wewe?’: Jackson Mandago Ignites Massive Voter Registration Drive in Uasin Gishu”

By Wasike Elvis
Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago has launched an ambitious and high-impact voter registration sensitization campaign across the county, targeting more than 150,000 unregistered Kenyans in a bold push to strengthen democratic participation.

The campaign, which has already gained momentum in several wards, is anchored on the powerful and relatable slogan “Mimi niko Kadi, je wewe?” (I have my voter’s card, do you?). The phrase has quickly caught on among residents, particularly the youth, serving both as a challenge and a call to action for eligible citizens who have yet to register as voters.

Addressing crowds during the campaign events, Senator Mandago emphasized the importance of civic responsibility, urging wananchi to take an active role in shaping the county’s and the nation’s future. He noted that voter registration is the foundation of democratic engagement, and without it, many citizens risk being left out of critical decision-making processes.

“Your vote is your voice. If you are not registered, you are surrendering your right to determine the leadership and development path of this country,” Mandago stated.

The sensitization drive has drawn the participation of several prominent leaders, signaling a united front in encouraging voter uptake. Among those present was Joseph Lagat, Chairperson of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), who underscored the need for collective responsibility in nation-building. He called on residents to not only register but also encourage their peers, families, and communities to do the same.

Also in attendance were Members of the County Assembly, including David Keitany, widely known as Shah of Sergoit Ward, and James Serem of Karuna Meibeki Ward. The MCAs echoed Mandago’s sentiments, highlighting how increased voter registration directly translates into stronger representation and improved service delivery at the grassroots level.

Hon. Keitany pointed out that many young people often disengage from the electoral process due to lack of information or motivation, a gap the current campaign seeks to bridge. On his part, Hon. Serem emphasized that voter registration is not just a right, but a duty that ensures accountability among leaders.

The campaign has been characterized by grassroots mobilization strategies, including door-to-door outreach, public barazas, youth forums, and engagement with community leaders. Special focus has been placed on first-time voters and marginalized groups, who form a significant portion of those yet to register.

In addition to mobilization efforts, leaders have been working closely with relevant electoral bodies to ensure that registration centers are accessible and adequately equipped to handle the anticipated surge in applicants.

Senator Mandago reiterated that the success of the initiative will depend on sustained public participation and awareness. He expressed confidence that Uasin Gishu County can surpass its target and set an example for other regions in the country.

As the campaign continues to gather pace, the message remains clear and consistent: every eligible Kenyan must take the step to register and be counted. With the rallying call “Mimi niko Kadi, je wewe?” echoing across villages and towns, the push for voter registration is not just a campaign—it is fast becoming a movement.
