Education CS Orders Probe into MMUST Graduation Irregularities

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has directed the Commission for University Education to launch a comprehensive investigation into allegations surrounding the authenticity of some graduands at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

In a statement issued Wednesday, Ogamba said the probe follows concerns raised across social and mainstream media platforms questioning the legitimacy of certain individuals who were awarded degrees during the university’s recent graduation ceremony.

“The Commission is required to ascertain that all graduands were bona fide students of the University and that they duly qualified for the awards conferred upon them,” Ogamba said.

The CS emphasized that the investigation will focus on verifying student records, enrollment status, and adherence to academic requirements leading up to graduation. He noted that any irregularities uncovered would be addressed in accordance with the law.

Ogamba reaffirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to upholding integrity within Kenya’s higher education system, stating that credibility of academic qualifications remains a top priority.

“The Ministry is committed to promoting and strengthening the credibility of our education and qualifications system in order to safeguard our reputation as a regional and international education hub,” he added.

The Commission for University Education is expected to submit its findings upon completion of the probe, which could have far-reaching implications for the university and affected graduands.
