NCA Highlights Safety Reforms Following Construction Incidents in Nairobi and Kericho

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has issued a detailed statement following two tragic construction incidents reported on March 18, 2026, in Nairobi County and Kericho County, reaffirming its commitment to safety, compliance, and accountability within Kenya’s construction sector.

The first incident occurred in Westlands, Nairobi, at a high-rise development where a slab collapsed during casting, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The second incident, in Kaptebeswet area of Belgut Sub-County in Kericho, involved a residential building where a structural failure led to one death and three injuries. Preliminary investigations in both cases point to structural weaknesses and possible lapses in site procedures.

As investigations continue, the Authority has emphasized the importance of strict adherence to construction regulations and professional standards—an approach that has been consistently strengthened under the leadership of Maurice Akech.

> “Under the leadership of Eng. Maurice Akech, the National Construction Authority has strengthened enforcement of safety and compliance standards across construction sites, ensuring that developers adhere to approved designs and professional supervision at every stage.”

> “Through his stewardship, the Authority continues to promote strict adherence to the National Building Code 2024, reinforcing a culture of safety, professionalism, and accountability within Kenya’s construction sector.”

The NCA noted that emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), county governments, and the Kenya Red Cross, responded swiftly to both incidents. The affected sites have since been secured to allow for thorough investigations aimed at establishing accountability and ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks.

> “Eng. Akech has championed multi-agency collaboration in emergency response, bringing together institutions such as disaster response units and humanitarian agencies to enhance rescue, recovery, and accountability efforts.”

The Authority further reiterated key safety measures, including the need for proper structural design approvals, adequate propping during construction, continuous on-site supervision by licensed professionals, and strict compliance with the National Building Code 2024.

> “His leadership has emphasized proactive risk mitigation—advocating for proper structural design approvals, adequate site supervision, and the use of qualified professionals to prevent avoidable tragedies.”

The NCA extended its deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

“Eng. Maurice Akech’s tenure reflects a commitment not only to regulation, but to safeguarding lives, restoring public confidence, and driving continuous improvement in the construction industry.”

As the Authority continues its investigations, it has assured the public that further updates will be provided, reinforcing its mandate to uphold safety, professionalism, and accountability across all construction activities in Kenya.
