Natembeya Calls for Unity, Defends Equal Development in Trans Nzoia

By Wasike Elvis

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has renewed his call for unity among residents, urging them to reject leaders who promote division along ethnic and tribal lines.

Speaking on Monday in Kiptoror Ward during a free seed distribution exercise, the governor expressed concern over what he described as rising cases of political leaders inciting communities through misinformation and tribal rhetoric. He warned that such tendencies threaten peaceful coexistence and could derail development efforts in the county.

Natembeya singled out Kiptoror Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kipchumba Birir, accusing him of spreading false claims that the county government neglects areas not predominantly inhabited by the Luhya community. The governor termed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

“And I want to say that is not true at all. I treat every region equally. You should know that I allocated your MCA KSh 30 million, which is the same amount I have allocated to each of the 25 wards,” Natembeya told residents.

He emphasized that equitable distribution of resources remains a key pillar of his administration, noting that all wards receive equal funding allocations to support development projects such as infrastructure, health services, and education.

To further counter the claims of bias, the governor provided employment statistics from Kiptoror Ward, highlighting what he said was clear evidence of inclusivity. Out of 11 enforcement officers recruited from the ward, 10 are from the Kalenjin community while only one is from the Luhya community.

“This clearly shows that my government does not discriminate. Opportunities are available to all residents regardless of their ethnic background,” he said.

Natembeya urged residents to remain vigilant and not be misled by leaders advancing personal political agendas at the expense of unity. He called on the public to focus on development and hold leaders accountable based on performance rather than ethnic affiliation.

The governor’s remarks came as he led the distribution of free seeds to farmers in Kiptoror Ward and later at Geta in Suwerwa Ward. The initiative, part of the county’s agricultural support program, aims to boost food production and improve livelihoods among local farmers.

He noted that agriculture remains a backbone of the county’s economy and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers through provision of inputs, extension services, and market access.

“We want our farmers to benefit directly from county programs. By providing certified seeds, we are ensuring improved yields and food security for our people,” he said.

The event was attended by several county officials and leaders, including County Secretary Truphosa Amere and Matisi MCA Obed Mwale. Also present were County Executive Committee Members Gideon Barongo (Roads), Chris Lorot (Health), Eliud Tormoi (Gender), Janerose Mutama (Education), and Patrick Gacheru (Trade).

Chief Officers Sammy Sichangi (Governance) and Jane Wachwenge (Gender) were also in attendance, alongside other county staff and local leaders.

Natembeya concluded by reiterating his commitment to fostering unity and ensuring balanced development across all parts of Trans Nzoia County. He encouraged residents to work together and resist divisive narratives, saying cohesion is essential for sustained progress.

“Development cannot thrive where there is division. Let us unite as one people and focus on building our county together,” he said.
