Mystery Deepens Over 13 Bodies Buried in Mass Grave in Kericho
Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a probe into the controversial burial of 13 unclaimed bodies transferred from Nyamira County Referral Hospital and interred in a single grave in Kericho County last Friday.
What initially appeared to be a routine disposal of unclaimed bodies has now sparked serious concern among authorities and the public. According to witnesses, a vehicle arrived at the burial site carrying multiple शवs, with no relatives present and no funeral rites observed. Grave diggers say they were simply instructed to dig, lower the bodies, and cover the grave.
Preliminary findings confirm that the bodies were indeed released from the Nyamira hospital. However, the procedure followed in their release and burial is now under intense scrutiny. At the center of the investigation is a purported court order that allegedly authorized the transfer and burial of the bodies. Detectives are working to verify the authenticity and legality of that document.
Under Kenyan law, the handling of unclaimed bodies is governed by strict guidelines. Hospitals are required to issue public notices, allow sufficient time for identification by relatives, and maintain clear and traceable records before any burial is conducted. Authorities say the circumstances in this case appear to deviate from those established procedures.
Key questions remain unanswered: Why were the bodies transported across county lines? Why were they buried in a mass grave instead of individually? And who authorized the process?
Adding to the concern are claims that some of the bodies exhibited unusual conditions, raising further suspicion about how they were handled prior to burial.
The DCI is expected to seek court orders to exhume the bodies as part of the investigation. Meanwhile, families and members of the public are demanding transparency and accountability.
For now, the quiet burial site in Kericho has become the focal point of a growing mystery—one that authorities say must be unraveled to ensure justice and uphold public trust.
