Embakasi East MP Babu Owino Rejects ODM Secretary General Position, Says He Is Aiming for Party Leadership

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has publicly declined proposals to have him elevated to the position of Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), asserting that his political ambition lies higher within the party hierarchy.

Speaking on Thursday , Owino dismissed the idea of replacing the current Secretary General, saying his focus is on the party’s top seat.

“I want to be the Party Leader, not Secretary General. The Secretary General remains Edwin Sifuna,” he stated firmly.

The remarks come in the wake of plans communicated in a recent notice for a Special National Delegates Conference, where the creation of an additional Deputy Party Leader position and consideration of leadership restructuring were listed on the agenda for the Orange Democratic Movement.

Owino’s rejection signals an intensifying internal contest over the future direction of the party ahead of the March 27 delegates meeting. His declaration also reaffirms support for Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who has been a central pillar in ODM’s national operations.

Political observers say Owino’s stance could shift the dynamics within ODM as succession debates and leadership realignments continue to shape the party’s future.

The Special National Delegates Conference is expected to address key restructuring issues as the party positions itself for upcoming political cycles.
