Chwele Modern Market Set for August Opening as Government Boosts Bungoma Development
President William Ruto has announced that the Sh345 million Chwele Modern Market will be ready for use by August, offering traders a modern and organized business environment.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the facility in Bungoma County, the President said the project is part of a broader government initiative to improve market infrastructure and support small-scale traders.
“I will be coming back in August to officially open this market so that our mama mboga can start operating from a dignified and well-organized space,” he said.
Ruto noted that the government is rolling out an ambitious programme to construct modern markets across the county, revealing that 15 are already under construction, with plans to add five more to further enhance trade and economic activity.
In addition to market development, the President announced major investments in water infrastructure aimed at improving access to clean water. He said the government will allocate Sh230 million to extend an 88-kilometre pipeline to supply households in Kibabii and Kanduyi within Bungoma town.
Further, Ruto disclosed that Sh2 billion in funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency will support the construction of a major water plant to serve Kapsokwony, Kimilili, Naitiri, and Webuye towns.
At the same event, Kenneth Lusaka urged the national government to ensure contractors handling key road projects in the county deliver within agreed timelines.
“Your Excellency, we kindly request that pressure be put on contractors working on key roads within Bungoma so that they are completed on time,” Lusaka said.
He added that the completion of ongoing flagship projects would significantly improve infrastructure, boost trade, and enhance service delivery for residents.
The developments form part of the government’s wider plan to stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level through infrastructure expansion and improved public services.
