Sifuna Raises Alarm Over Parallel Funding of ODM Rallies
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has raised concerns over the source of funds being used to finance recent party rallies, claiming that the large sums of money on display are not coming from the party’s official accounts.
Speaking on the matter, Sifuna said there appears to be “parallel funding” for activities conducted under ODM branding, distancing the party’s headquarters from the extravagant spending witnessed at some recent events.
“The money you see being spent in ODM rallies is not coming from ODM headquarters,” Sifuna said. “There is parallel funding for activities clothed in ODM colours.”
Sifuna, who is a signatory to ODM’s bank accounts, said the party’s official expenditure has been minimal in recent months. According to him, the last funds disbursed from the party’s accounts were used for celebrations held in Mombasa, and the amount spent was significantly lower than what was evident during the rally.
“I am a signatory to the bank accounts, and the last money we expended officially was for the celebrations in Mombasa, and it was a fraction of what we saw there,” he said.
The remarks come amid growing public debate over the scale of spending at political rallies, with questions being raised about transparency, accountability, and the influence of financiers within political parties.
Sifuna’s comments are likely to fuel internal discussions within ODM regarding funding structures and the control of party activities, especially as the party continues to mobilize supporters across the country.
ODM leadership has yet to issue an official statement clarifying the sources of funding for the recent rallies.
