Emurua Dikirr MP Among Six Killed in Helicopter Crash in Nandi

A tragic helicopter crash in Nandi County on Saturday evening has claimed the lives of six people, including Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno.

The aircraft went down at approximately 4:45 p.m. at the edge of Chepkieb Forest in Mosop, shortly after attempting to take off from a makeshift landing site near the forest. Witnesses said the crash occurred amid heavy rains and poor visibility in the area.

According to residents, the helicopter had earlier made an emergency landing at around 4:00 p.m. as weather conditions worsened. The pilot reportedly engaged nearby herders while assessing whether it was safe to continue the journey.

Moments later, the chopper lifted off but failed to gain sufficient altitude. Witnesses said it struck trees a few metres from the take-off point before crashing.

“The impact was instant and fiery,” said one resident who rushed to the scene. “The chopper burst into flames immediately.”

All six people on board — five passengers and the pilot — are believed to have died on the spot. The helicopter had reportedly been ferrying passengers from Endebess before the crash.

Emergency responders and local authorities secured the area as investigations into the cause of the accident began. Officials are expected to examine weather conditions, aircraft maintenance records, and flight clearance procedures as part of the probe.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through Emurua Dikirr constituency and across the country, with leaders and residents mourning the loss of the vocal legislator and the other victims.

More details are expected as authorities continue investigations and formally identify all those who perished in the crash.
