Murkomen Chairs Strategic Meeting to Align Correctional Services with Kenya Kwanza Agenda

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has underscored the need for all departments within the Ministry of Interior to align their priorities with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s development agenda as the year begins.

Speaking after chairing a high-level meeting with the State Department for Correctional Services, CS Murkomen said the engagement was aimed at reviewing the department’s priorities for the year and charting strategies to ensure effective implementation of government programmes.

“The beginning of the year provides an opportunity for us to refocus and ensure that every department is working in harmony towards the realisation of the Kenya Kwanza agenda,” Murkomen said.

He noted that the meeting placed strong emphasis on the implementation of Presidential Directives, particularly the freeing up of prison land in selected towns to support the Affordable Housing Programme. The CS said the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the government’s plan to expand access to decent and affordable housing while optimising the use of public land.

Other key areas discussed included fast-tracking the utilisation of underutilised prison land to enhance food production, a move aimed at strengthening food security and reducing the cost of feeding inmates. The meeting also explored ways to enhance the commercialisation of prison industries to improve self-sufficiency and generate additional revenue.

Additionally, Murkomen highlighted the importance of constructing institutional housing for correctional services officers and ensuring the completion of stalled and ongoing projects across the country.

“This is about improving service delivery, enhancing the welfare of our officers, and ensuring that correctional services play their rightful role in national development,” he said.

The meeting was attended by the Principal Secretary for Correctional Services, Dr. Salome Beacco, the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr. Patrick Aranduh, and other senior officials from the department.

CS Murkomen reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to accountability, efficiency, and results-driven leadership, noting that progress on the agreed priorities would be closely monitored throughout the year.
