MP Kariuki Orders Immediate Filling of Abandoned Quarries After Tragic Deaths in Ndia
Ndia Member of Parliament George Kariuki has directed contractors operating in the constituency to immediately fill and secure abandoned quarry sites following the death of three people in a waterlogged pit in Kiandai.
The victims — two children and an adult — drowned after one of the children slipped into the deep water while fishing, prompting the others to attempt a rescue. Residents say a previous fatality had also occurred at the same site, raising concerns about long-standing safety neglect.
Kariuki, who chairs the National Assembly’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee, visited the affected families and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives.
“It is heartbreaking to lose young lives in a place that should have been secured long ago,” he said. “I will speak with the company to ensure the families receive some form of assistance during this difficult period.”
He criticised contractors for abandoning excavated sites without backfilling or fencing them off, saying the practice puts communities at great risk.
“It is good practice for contractors to either fill these pits or find ways to make them beneficial to the surrounding community. We must turn potential hazards into assets rather than leave them as threats,” he said.
The MP pledged to push for accountability from the construction company responsible for the site and explore avenues for compensation to the bereaved families.
Residents have urged authorities to fast-track enforcement of safety regulations to prevent further tragedies in quarry-prone areas.
