KMTC Releases 22,776 Health Professionals into the Frontline During the 94th Graduation Ceremony

Kenya celebrated a significant milestone in its health sector today as the Deputy President, H.E. Prof. Kindiki Kithure, officiated at the 94th Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Graduation Ceremony held at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. The event brought together national leaders, development partners, families, and thousands of students to witness the graduation of 22,776 new health professionals who are set to join the frontline of Kenya’s healthcare system.

In his remarks, the Deputy President affirmed KMTC's crucial role in guiding the country’s progress towards Universal Health Coverage, emphasising that the institution is the backbone of Kenya’s health workforce. He reflected on KMTC’s remarkable transformation, noting its growth from four students in 1927 to over 85,500 learners across 91 campuses today. This growth is a testament to Kenya’s commitment to equitable access to health care and national unity. Prof. Kindiki praised the College for producing 80% of the country’s middle-level health workforce and for pioneering programs that support national health reforms, including training in health insurance, oncology, palliative care, nursing, midwifery, and primary health care.

The Deputy President reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening the health system through investments in training, digital transformation, and student welfare. He highlighted the allocation of Kshs. 9.7 billion this year towards staffing, infrastructure, laboratories, and student support, and welcomed ongoing efforts to prepare KMTC graduates for opportunities both domestically and internationally. He urged the graduates to embrace technology and innovation and to adapt to the changing healthcare landscape, reminding them that each patient they serve contributes to Kenya’s shared journey towards dignity and health for all.

Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki, CBS, celebrated the graduation as a national achievement rooted in nearly 100 years of KMTC’s excellence. She highlighted the institution’s growing international reputation, noting that almost 10,000 graduates have secured placements abroad over the past five years. She emphasised that the impact of KMTC professionals is evident in improved immunisation rates, stronger community health systems, and expanded access to vital health services. The PS reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing student support through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), improving training environments, and ensuring KMTC graduates serve both locally and globally.

KMTC Board Chairperson Mr. Joseah K. Cheruiyot expressed gratitude to the Government for its continued support in modernising training infrastructure, recruiting young lecturers, and expanding the College’s presence nationwide. He highlighted significant progress in project completion, digital learning, and the establishment of Centres of Excellence. He urged the graduates to maintain professionalism and compassion as they begin their service to the nation.

KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch praised the institution’s recent achievements, including its ranking as Africa’s top institution in digital transformation within public sector education. He commended the graduates for their resilience and reminded them that they are entering the world as ambassadors of KMTC and Kenya. He expressed gratitude to the Government, the Ministry of Health, county governments, and partners for their support as the College approaches its centenary.

The ceremony concluded with a collective call for the graduates to serve with integrity, humility, and innovation as they embark on their roles as Kenya’s next generation of health professionals..
