Kenyan Educator Shokwei V. Barsulai Named Top Three Finalist at Tufunzeni Teachers Awards

 Award-winning educator Shokwei V. Barsulai has been named among the top three finalists nationally for the Teacher of the Year Award at the 2024 Tufunzeni Teachers Awards, held at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in Nairobi.

The prestigious recognition saw Barsulai selected from educators representing all 47 counties, placing him among the country’s most impactful teachers. The announcement marked a significant moment in a ceremony dedicated to celebrating excellence, innovation, and commitment within Kenya’s teaching profession.

Speaking during the event, Barsulai described the honour as deeply humbling, noting that it reflects the transformative work taking place in classrooms across the country, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

“It was powerful to meet fellow teachers from across Kenya and to share stories of impact, especially from mashinani where so much meaningful work is happening,” he said.

The awards brought together teachers whose work continues to shape lives and communities through education. Muthoni, who emerged as the overall winner of the Teacher of the Year Award, was congratulated for her inspiring contribution to the sector.

Barsulai also praised the Tufunzeni team, led by Dennis Omolo, for creating a platform that elevates teachers’ voices and recognises their often-unseen efforts.

“Tufunzeni has created a space where teachers’ stories are seen, heard, and valued,” he said.

Dedicating the recognition to his learners and supporters, Barsulai emphasised that children remain at the heart of his work.

“I dedicate this honour to our children who inspire me every single day, and to everyone who continues to cheer me on,” he added.

The Tufunzeni Teachers Awards continue to grow as a national platform celebrating educators who go beyond the classroom to make lasting impact.
