Governor Njuki Launches Sh70 Million Cheera Modern Market Project

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has officially launched the construction of the Sh70 million Cheera Modern Market and ordered the safe relocation of traders to a designated temporary site to pave the way for the project's commencement.

Speaking at Cheera Market in Mugwe Ward during the relocation and site handover, Governor Njuki praised the collaboration between the National and County Governments in delivering key infrastructure aimed at boosting local trade and improving the livelihoods of residents.

He thanked the Kenya Kwanza administration for supporting the initiative, noting that the management of the market will fall under the Government upon completion.

“There is no meaningful development without active involvement of its greatest stakeholders, who are the people,” he said, adding that the county had commissioned an alternative space where traders would operate during the construction period.
“We are constructing a permanent modern market anchored on community participation,” he added.

Governor Njuki also announced that no bars will be allowed to operate inside the new market, saying the aim is to nurture an organised and productive business environment.

Regional Director for the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Patrick Mwangi, said the market will cost Sh70 million and is expected to be completed within nine months. He confirmed that the contractor had assured authorities of timely delivery.

Mwangi further emphasised the importance of giving priority to local residents for job opportunities during construction and encouraging the use of local suppliers for building materials.

Once completed, the Cheera Modern Market is expected to offer a safer, more structured trading environment and stimulate economic growth in Mugwe Ward and the wider Tharaka Nithi County.
