Former Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei Named Director of Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons

The national government on Thursday announced a major reshuffle of senior police leadership, including the appointment of former Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei to head the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons (KNFP-SALW).
In the changes, Bungei replaces Jacinta Muthoni, who retired from the post after several years at the helm. Until this appointment, Bungei served as Director of Operations at the National Police Service headquarters — Vigilance House.
The KNFP-SALW, established to coordinate Kenya’s efforts in controlling illicit small arms and light weapons nationwide, plays a central role in arms marking, tracing and cooperation with regional and international partners under frameworks such as the Regional Centre on Small Arms and Light Weapons (RECSA).
According to police headquarters, the reshuffle aims to strengthen the response capacity ahead of the 2027 general elections, tackle proliferation of illicit firearms, and support broader security reforms, including expansion of infrastructure and modernization of police operations.
In separate moves, other senior commanders were transferred — including a swap of regional assignments between Rift Valley and Central commands — and several officers reassigned to new roles at county and training-academy level.
With Bungei now leading KNFP-SALW, the government signals renewed commitment to curb illicit small arms proliferation — a longstanding security priority — and to enhance coordination between national and regional security stakeholders.
