Ken Maswai Speaks Out for the First Time After Brutal Assault in Kapseret

Kapseret resident Ken Maswai has broken his silence for the first time since he was violently assaulted earlier this month, claiming that his attackers were linked to individuals associated with a prominent politician in Uasin Gishu County.

Maswai, who recorded a statement at Langas Police Station and obtained a P3 form documenting his injuries, says the assault took place on Sunday, November 2, at around 7:10 p.m., near St. George’s area close to Eldoret International Airport.

“I was heading home after meeting a political aspirant for Kapseret. Along the way, two vehicles—a Prado and a Subaru, both without number plates—blocked my path. Six men came out with sticks, and one of them pointed a gun at me. They beat me until I lost consciousness. I later woke up in a hospital bed,” Maswai recounted, his voice weak as he continues to recover from surgery.

According to Maswai, three days before the attack he received a phone call from Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, warning him against commenting on development issues in the constituency.

“He asked me what I wanted, and I told him I was just expressing my views about the lack of development, especially our poor roads. He told me to stop, but I said I would continue speaking out,” Maswai said.

Despite the ordeal, Maswai has vowed not to be silenced.

“I want to assure the people of Kapseret, especially the youth, that I am ready to die for speaking the truth. I will not be cowed. Oscar Sudi has been MP for over 13 years, but I will continue talking about the issues that affect our people,” he declared.

Human Rights Activists Demand Justice

Human rights advocate Kimutai Kirui, who assisted Maswai in filing his statement, condemned the assault and urged authorities to act swiftly.

“We are witnessing a dangerous rise in political goons in Uasin Gishu who act with impunity, protected by powerful politicians. Some even intimidate police officers who try to enforce the law,” Kirui said.

He called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to take firm action, warning that residents will hold peaceful demonstrations within 14 days if justice is delayed.

Police Launch Investigations

Kapseret Sub-County Police Commander Zephania Kamuren confirmed that police have begun investigations into the incident.

“We have launched thorough and impartial investigations. The victim has already recorded a statement, and we are following up on crucial leads,” Kamuren stated.

Political Tensions Mount in Uasin Gishu

The attack has sparked outrage among Kapseret residents and civil society groups, who accuse local leaders of tolerating political thuggery and intimidation.

Oscar Sudi, who has served as Kapseret MP since 2013, has not yet commented publicly on the allegations.

Human rights organizations have described the incident as a test case for the government’s commitment to protecting free speech and ensuring accountability ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Maswai, still recovering from his injuries, insists he will pursue justice to the end.

“The people who attacked me are known to me. I want the police to arrest and charge them. This is not just about me—it’s about every citizen’s right to speak without fear,” he said firmly.
